Tamil Nadu: School education department to probe why many skipped board examinations

COIMBATORE: High level of absenteeism in Class X and XII board examinations has prompted the school education department to find the reasons behind the trend.
Board examinations for classes XII and X that commenced last week witnessed 1,238 and 2,265 absentees respectively.

According to chief educational officer (CEO) N Geetha, the high absentees ratio could be because of some families returning to their native places because of the Covid-19 pandemic. “Students from other districts and outside Tamil Nadu are studying in government schools after their families settled here for work. After the Covid-induced lockdown, they might have returned.”

Some students might be reluctant to take offline exams following the long gap after the pandemic, the official said. “The absentees tally is higher when compared to previous years. Even after offline classes resumed, there had been a limited turnout of students.”
